my love affair with books started when i was very young and would visit my local brooklyn branch of the library, "where the wild things are", "the lonely doll", "bread and jam for frances"..."charlottes web" made me cry each time i read it and how i lost myself for endless summer days reading "the hardy boys", "nancy drew" and lets not forget those "bobsy twins"!
i can pour over magazines the dozens and have every issue of mary englebreits home magazine categorized by season.and have dozens and dozens of cookbooks, hell im a paper artist! a trip to the book store is like disney land, its not just a trip but an experience, am i painting a picture for you here?
i was having nothing to do with an electronic book of any kind,i would poo poo such an idea. electronic book, what idiot thought that was a good idea?
well, i received a gift card from my students and wanted to buy something that would remind me of them and i was chatting about books with my mom and she and my dad both have kindles and share books, and i'm trying to purge items in my home and more books is the last thing i need, i can only use so many to decorate with, not to mention how expensive they are to buy. so i thought, why the hell not indulge in a kindle and see what all the hoopla was about for myself. julian has been wanting one as well so off to best buy we went to purchase our electronic books. now we got the basic model, i couldn't bring myself to get the more expensive one even though my give card was very generous, but i did have some shoes in mind and i wasn't even sure i would enjoy using this foreign object. well folks i'm here to tell you I LOVE MY KINDLE........yikes, there i said it, i do, i love it.its easy to read, its light and reading in bed is so enjoyable, no fussing with the book, loosing pages, or getting a cramp in my hand, i have downloaded several books and can't put the darn thing down! its as if i have learned to read for the first time and cannot get enough.

now don't get me wrong, i will still take trips to the book store and i will still buy a gazillion magazines and the odd book now and again, but this gal has caught up with them times.....now if i could only figure out how to set the dvd player and work my remote and i will be an electronic guru!stacycakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10010252095858749784noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279659264558734799.post-75529124036237822812013-05-05T19:13:00.001-07:002013-05-05T19:13:06.522-07:00sending this out to the universe
Picnic sandwiches
Originally uploaded by stacycakes

its no surprise to you that this has been a very stressful year for my family and myself. the loss of my uncle has been a devastating one and i don't think we will ever get over his untimely death. now we are facing some financial worries. i know that necessity is the mother of invention and i have worked very hard to provide for my family after my divorce but i need to find something to do to supplement my income. so i need some advice, and here is where you, my friends come in, here are some of my business ideas
1. selling my famous raspberry torte, it is delicious, it is always one of the most requested desserts that i make, good idea? pros/cons?
2. i could be a picnic planner, i love picnics, i make lovely picnics for my family, i could make a lovely romantic picnic or a family picnic for twelve, no problem, from sandwiches to dessert, and all the accouterments, i am your gal! good idea? pros/cons?
3. simple art/baking classes for children?i am a preschool teacher, i am an artist, and i am a cook (although not professionally trained) i would really enjoy some small classes with kids, what fun we could have. good idea? pros/cons?
just writing these ideas down have made me feel a bit less confused but would love and appreciate any feed back you could offer.
so i;m sending this out to the universe....universe can you hear me?
stacycakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10010252095858749784noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279659264558734799.post-83091625059904785292012-10-07T19:32:00.002-07:002012-10-07T19:32:41.367-07:00mixed media door

once upon a time i had decoupaged and painted my door and after several years needed a change. i happened upon a fabulous dolce and gabbana catalog from paris and thought the images would be beautiful decoupaged on my door. i started by punching circles with my martha stewart punch and deocoupaged them on the door, i used approximatly 125 circles. this worked out well to cover up the pre existing decoupage. i then chose a paint pallete of creams, blues, taupe and gold. i painted around each of the circles haphazardy. i think the effect is very visually pleasing, i will go back in and add some more creams to lighten it up, but am happy with it thus far. never be afraid to take a chance, the worse thing that could happen is you need to buy a new door.

I wanted to paint my room the color of my Tiffany box, cause let's face it, when you are lucky enough to receive a gift from tiffany's how excited do you get? I get very excited!.... Breakfast at tiffany's is one of my favorite movies and I enjoy the store, it's jewels and the color immensely.now I went to the store and got lots of swatches that I thought were a match but nothing came close, and the nice people at home depot told me they could match this color exactly,I thought This was the best thing since peanut butter and jelly, ut the machine wasnt working so we ventured to a different home depot. Low and behold we left w the perfect color! We painted the ceiling buckwheat by martha Stewart, the duvet and matching shams are linen from restoration hardware, the throw is from anthropology, the " love" shams are from the u.k. And the burlap drapes are from ballad design. The dress form is from a flea market in manhattan, the ballerina prints are degas, the night stand was my grandmothers sewing table that I painted. The bench is an antique that i reupholstered w burlap and stenciled w a french stencil. My bed frame is from pottery barn and I added the piece of salvaged wood to the head board. My room is my sanctuary, and I adore sleeping in a Tiffany box every night!!
stacycakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10010252095858749784noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279659264558734799.post-68869586225846400812012-04-29T06:35:00.001-07:002012-04-29T06:35:00.912-07:00Lemon squares And Meyer lemons

Originally uploaded by stacycakes

Last week we went to eataly and I couldn't resist the beautiful lemons I saw when I walked in. I searched for a recipe that suited me and settled on this one from about.com. Even though I didn't eat any myself, the empty platter was proof enough!
Heres the recipe
2 cups flour
1/2 cup confectionary sugar
2 sticks butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4tsp salt
4 eggs well beaten
1 heaping teaspoon grated lemon zest
1/4 cup lemon juice
Sift flour and confectionary sugar together, cut in butter until blended.ressive into bottom of 9x 13 pan, I used a fluted tart pan. Bake at 325 for 30 minutes. Combine re,remaining ingredients and spread on crust. Bake at 350 for 30 more minutes. We started out by talking about the difference between ponds, rivers, lakes and oceans. Than the children were asked where different creatures live. I filled my sensory table with water beads, which resemble frog eggs. If you are not familiar with water beads, google them immediately, they are very popular with the preschool set. It was so lovely out that we held circle time outside and I drew the different stages of the frogs life. The children than all had a turn drawing one stage. Most chose frog eggs, they did a great job! One day hey painted just tadpoles, we made frogs out of paper plates, and we illustrated the life cycle on paper, which though a challenge, came great! We made some cat talks out of pup cleaners and some paper turtles and made our own pond in our train table.finish the week w leap frog and a rendition of five gene and speckled frogs. I always enjoy this lesson, and so do the children!
stacycakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10010252095858749784noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279659264558734799.post-6631678111373812012-04-15T18:01:00.001-07:002012-04-15T18:01:54.560-07:00Bunnies and carrot fun

Originally uploaded by stacycakes

We did so many fun projects leading up to Easter, we did a whole study on carrots, we planted carrot seeds, ate carrots as snack, we drew carrots, pai Ted carrots and sculpted carrots and than added some bunnies into the mix, cause bunnies love carrots! You take a shallow dish and pour just enough milk to cover the bottom. Add different color food coloring, I used green, yellow and two different blues. Dip sime q-tips in dishwashing liquid and than take one and dip it into the milk. Watch as the colors start to move, do not stir the milk around, just keep dabbing the tip in at different areas where it looks like the colors are still very concentrated. The kids are nabbing a blast with it, I added some small sand toys, rakes, funnels, shovels, and than the kids decided to add some matchbox cars. Than I added some large collared gems, the fun is endless!

Here's what you need to make it:
rice
White vinegar
Food coloring
Baggies
Cookie sheet
Place 1 1/2 cups of rice for each color you want to make. Add 1 tbs vinegar and food coloring. Seal the bag and have the kids shake until the colors all mixed unto the rice. I was trying to think of fun letter r projects, we made raindrops one day, traced the letter r, made colored rice for the sensory table and made colored rainbows. I filled an egg carton with alt he colors of the rainbow and had a special painting tool that pulls the paint, kind of like an ice scraper. I put all the different colored paint on the tip of the scraper and let the kids pull the paint onto the paper, they came so beautiful!.... Next post, colored rice for some sensory fun!
stacycakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10010252095858749784noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279659264558734799.post-16946538251642530952011-11-10T16:13:00.000-08:002011-11-10T16:13:21.124-08:00me and j
its been a lovely few months in my world, actually its been a lovely 6 months to be exact. despite a hurricane, a fall snow storm and two power outages, my life has been full of fun, love and laughter. as thanksgiving is upon us, i would like to take the time to give thanks for the small everyday gifts i have been blessed with. i had a very difficult start to this year, and as the year will be coming to a close soon enough i am so thankful that i made it through and am happier than i thought i would ever be again. so take the time to enjoy a picnic, or a sun rise or a song with someone....life is short, and unexpected so carpe diem, carpe diem!

I would sit for endless hours listening to his stories while he rubbed my back, his words like a lullaby, soothing, comforting, I couldn't remember a better feeling.
I remember Sunday mornings, going to visit after church.he would have bagels and donuts and I was allowed to have a little coffee with milk, I felt so grown up! I would eat a bagel and cream cheese and Joseph a bagel with butter, and we would fight over which mug we would get.
Joseph and I would be so excited when our parents went away because we knew Grammy and grampy would babysit, and that meant trips to the candy store, trips to the toy store, lots of junk food and of course chocolate pudding pie! How lucky my brother and I were to have the "best of grampy".
Last night I was thinking that not only was he mine and joseph's first best friend, but tj's as well. He insisted on driving me to all of his doctors appointments, buying all of his shoes and taking us out for burgers,(hence the name poppa burger). He was allies' first best friend playing with her for hours, worrying because she didn't speak for the first year and a half,( now she doesn't shut up,little did we know!). Followed by trey's first best friend playing ball in the alley and taking him to the corner for candy, and segi's first best friend even in his 90's!
A greater gift we couldn't ask for. He brought out the best in everyone he came across and made everyone feel special. He gave love away freely and love always found it's way back to him. We thought he was invincible, he would live forever! Allie told me that she thought he would be here for her children,it never crossed her mind that he wouldn't be. But Joe Joe would not have wanted to live if his quality of life was compromised. He knew when the show was over and left this world quickly and quietly with dignity. He leaves behind a family that has learned so much from him. He was so proud of each and every one of us and he will live on in our hearts forever. He believed in humanity and found the good in everyone. I realize he has helped me be the woman that I am today and I know he would be so thrilled to see all the love in this church and over the past few days. We celebrate a life lived to the fullest. He was a humble man who was so rich with love and was so thankful for each day he had on this earth.
It was mother Teresa who said, "we can do no great things, only small things with great love", my grandpa lived it....sleep well dear grampy, Joe Joe,poppa burger, we love you!stacycakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10010252095858749784noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279659264558734799.post-8576882059792400942010-12-31T05:37:00.000-08:002010-12-31T05:37:18.905-08:00resolutions....

happy new year to all my friends in blog land.....if you knew me in real life you would know that i don't typically make new years resolutions, i don't even enjoy ringing in the new year...i hate change!... since i was a little girl, i just can't get with the whol new year idea. i was content and happy with the old one, why change it?.....all in all i would rather pretend that it's not even happening, ( i am a cancer after all, and we hate change and we are homebodies), so if i had my druthers, i would be at home, not celebrating a new year!, but i digress.....in my effort to be more organized i started to make lists this week...and i made a list of new years resolutions, mostly because i enjoy checking things off my list as i do them, i get a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, i highly recommend it!....here is my new years resolutions....ready?
1.let the little things go...i good example of this would be my son leaving his socks all over the place and never with the dirty laundry, it drives me crazy but i vow to let it go.....awww, see, its working out great so far!
2. i invested in a pedomiter over the summer and walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day, which i vow to keep doing everyday in 2011...dr.oz suggests we all walk 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy, i believe he is correct!
3.i will sit at my art table every day and do something creative, even if its making a tag,or doodling. (of course teaching preschool i have to be creative everyday, but i mean on a personal level).
4. psalm 46:10 "be still and know i am God"
5. i will greet the day with thankfullness and enthusiasm...(see #1)
6. tolerence towards others who don't have the same ideas as me....i tend to think my ideas are the best,(i know i know, bitchy!) and not give my opinion unless it is needed.
7. do a minimum of one kind thing each and every day for a stranger, co worker etc....
8. get organized....i am a bit of a scatter brain, and although i hate clutter and mess i am unorganized, or as i like to refer to it as closet caos....(as long as its out of sight i am ok with it).
so in closing i would like to encourage everyone to make a resolution list, it was good to write down my goals and it gives me a challenge for the new year, perhaps this year i will be ok with ringing in the new and saying goodbye to the old!.....stacycakeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10010252095858749784noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279659264558734799.post-24967231188231416782010-12-24T04:59:00.000-08:002010-12-24T04:59:27.021-08:00brown paper packages, tied up with string......these are a few of my favorite things...... i want to wish all my friends in blog land a very joyous christmas filled with blessings of family and good memories.....i always wax sentimental this time of the year, and think back on the past christmas's and all the people who are no longer with us....i think especially about my grandmother who died on her birthday 8 yrs ago in december.....i still miss her everyday, but christmas especially. i used to do alot of cooking with her, and as we bread the vegetables for the frito misto we would listened to christmas music on her little kitchen radio and shake the veggies in brown paper bags of flour, i somehow realized that this joy, this memory was special and may not always be here....and i was right, but as i think of her and all the past memories, i look ahead to to this christmas and all the memories we will create this christmas eve, i see the promise of the future in my childrens eyes, and one day when i am a grandmother i will flour vegetables in a brown paper bag filled with flour with my grandchildren and still remember my own with such love....and time and memories live on.....
text-align: center;">i finally got to some of the things on my to do list this weekend, one of them was to re upholster my antique bench. my cat thinks this is his scratching post,and ruined the burlap that i had on here previously.i purchased some new burlap for 2.99 a yard at my local fabric store. i decided to stencil my burlap with a french stencil that i love. i used a chocolate brown acrylic paint. after it dried i stapled it to the exising bench seat and viola!!!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmrlTfGnhCt57uOcLAuxmK9j1GUKdK2xkUO_3xbIybyRXf2C8aD2JiGZI_q4B-O-OluoDij42sf891nfi6MGxRqLjMRZuxCZU4sJofpdAhYHpkUCJ9eKTu2kO8iKuo0vRHQf_Td25Pw-8/s1600/class+room+and+bench+011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em;
